“I show up, lead with integrity, and fight for what’s right — because every voice in Ward 5 deserves to be heard, every neighborhood deserves to feel safe, and every family deserves the opportunity to thrive.”

— Shalanda Hunt

Dear Neighbor,

I’m Shalanda Hunt, and I’m running for Jackson City Council – Ward 5 because our community deserves safe neighborhoods, affordable housing, strong public safety, and real economic opportunity. These are the foundations of a thriving Jackson, and I’m ready to fight for them on your behalf.

I’m a lifelong Jackson resident, proud mother of two, and currently President of the Jackson Public Schools Board of Education. For more than 20 years, I’ve served children, families, and neighborhoods — first as a Youth Specialist at the Jackson County Youth Center, then in Child Welfare Case Management and coordination, and now as a Child Welfare Trainer for the State of Michigan.

I have always shown up for our community, and I’m committed to continuing that work on City Council. On November 4th, I would be honored to earn your vote so we can build a stronger, safer, and more connected Jackson — together.

Shalanda’s Vision for Jackson

Public Safety

Every person deserves to feel safe in their neighborhood. The recent rise in gun violence and the loss of young lives is a tragedy we cannot accept. I will work to unite our community, hold leaders accountable, and take bold action to protect our children, strengthen community-police relationships, and reclaim the safety of our streets.

Economic Opportunity

A thriving Jackson means creating real pathways to success for every resident. I will work to attract good-paying jobs, support small businesses, and invest in job training programs that prepare our workforce for the future. By partnering with local organizations and removing barriers to economic growth, we can ensure that opportunity is within reach for everyone in Ward 5.

Neighborhoods

Safe, vibrant neighborhoods are the foundation of a strong city. I will fight for better roads, upgraded infrastructure, and the investments Ward 5 needs to grow. By working with local organizations, housing advocates, and service providers, we can ensure every family has access to safe shelters, mental health support, job training, and permanent housing solutions.
